An American family vacationing in Mali was trapped when anti-government rebels launched attacks and the government closed the country’s airspace and borders.
Prior to making the trip, the familycontracted with Talus Group for SafeTravel℠ planning and advice. Based on the family’s itinerary and overseas experience, we provided recommendations and protocols to follow while in Mali.
When violence erupted, the family initiated the planned protocols and minimized their risks. Talus Group maintained daily contact and monitored military and political developments. We also began staging resources from elsewhere in Africa to extract the family if the rebels became a direct threat. After nearly a week of watchful waiting, the family exited Mali safely.
The parents of a young professional working for a small NGO in Kampala asked Talus Group to provide additional security for their daughter. Kampala is a medium-to-high-risk environment, with street crime, kidnapping, and an emergent al-Shabaab terrorist threat to the expatriate community in Kampala in particular and Uganda East Africa in general.
We contacted the young woman and conducted an in-depth interview to obtain a complete picture of her circumstances, environment, friends, routine and lifestyle. During follow-on telephone contacts, we provided her with security training and advice. A Talus Group security asset in Kampala conducted an on-the-ground assessment and additional security/safety training. A "911" capability was put in place to provide her with a personalized 24/7 response capability in Kampala in the event of any type of trouble or emergency.
